More than 15,000 local residents and visitors from as far away as San Antonio, drawn by two evenings of outdoor music concerts headlined by national and international stars, along with four days of one of the country’s top-rated carnivals, could set a record turnout for the 49th Annual Fiesta Edinburg on Thursday, February 23 through Sunday, February 26, 2017, reports the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation. “I believe we will break our records, and typically, we average 12,000 to 15,000 visitors for the four-day event, but with concerts, the carnival, the new venue, and the parade, we should surpass that figure,” said Ronnie Larralde, Director of Marketing and Special Events for the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce. “We have been promoting this event since December, and it has created the biggest buzz. Their is great entertainment coming, there has been a lot of promotion for our city, and it has continued to grow.” Major attractions are the Heart of America Carnival, regional food, arts/crafts plus the top notch musical entertainment, which include Josh Turner, Lauren Corzine, Eddie Sáenz, and The Powell Brothers on Friday evening, and Los Cadetes de Linares de Rosendo Cantú, Zamorales, Notable, and Resplandor on Saturday evening.

The Edinburg EDC, whose Executive Director is Agustín García, Jr., is the jobs-creation arm of the Edinburg Mayor and Edinburg City Council. It is also one of the major sponsors for Fiesta Edinburg, which celebrates the designation in 1908 of Edinburg as the county seat of Hidalgo County.

The Edinburg EDC Board of Directors is comprised of Mayor Richard García as President, Harvey Rodríguez, Jr. as Vice President, Elías Longoria, Jr., as Secretary/Treasurer, and Richard Ruppert and Dr. Peter Dabrowski as Members.

Mayor Richard García and EEDC Executive Director Agustín García, Jr. are not related.

Alex Ríos, Jr., Chair-elect of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, Letty González, President of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, and Ronnie Larralde, Director of Marketing and Special Events for the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, on Tuesday, February 22, 2017 provided an update about the upcoming four-day festival to the Mayor and Edinburg City Council during the public comment forum of the city council session.

“When I think of the month of February, and I am only saying this because my wife is not here, I really look forward to Fiesta Edinburg, not just Valentine’s Day,” joked Ríos, well-aware that the Edinburg Cable Network was broadcasting his comments live to thousands of homes in the city.

But the economic impact to the community was his main point.

“We have had record-breaking numbers in the sales of concert tickets” for the event, which for the first time is being hosted at H-E-B Park, the outdoor entertainment complex which was designed for large audiences for sports and other events, such as Fiesta Edinburg, noted Ríos, who also serves as Director for the House District 40 Office of Rep. Terry Canales, D-Edinburg.

Multi-platinum MCA Nashville recording artist Josh Turner will headline the event with a performance on Friday, February 24, 2017 at the amphitheater that is part of H-E-B Park.

In addition to a soon-to-be opened 9,700 seat capacity soccer-specific stadium, which will be home to the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, H-E-B Park is a fully-lighted entertainment system that also features an amphitheater with a capacity of 2,000 individuals, where the two consecutive nights of Fiesta Edinburg concerts, on Friday and Saturday, will take place.

“We are excited about the new venue and we know our festival fans are going to love it as well,” said González. “The facilities are state-of-the-art and this is going to create a statement environment like no other. The amphitheater is going to be electric.”

An amphitheater is an open-air venue used for entertainment, performances, and, depending on its size, even sports.

H-E-B Park is located at 1616 S. Raul Longoria Road. In previous years, Fiesta Edinburg was held at the Edinburg Municipal Park.

Larralde supported Ríos’ prediction that more than 15,000 people will take part in the popular gathering .

“I believe we will break our records, and typically, we average 12,000 to 15,000 visitors for the four-day event, but with concerts, the carnival, the new venue, and the parade, we should surpass that figure,” he said. “We have been promoting this event since December, and it has created the biggest buzz. Their is great entertainment coming, there has been a lot of promotion for our city, and it has continued to grow.”

As local leaders were in the last hours of preparations for the 49th Annual Fiesta Edinburg, presented by the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, they expressed their excitement about H-E-B Park serving as the site of the event.

Other major attractions are the Heart of America Carnival, regional food, arts/crafts plus the top notch musical entertainment, which include Josh Turner, Lauren Corzine, Eddie Sáenz, and The Powell Brothers on Friday evening, and Los Cadetes de Linares de Rosendo Cantú, Zamorales, Notable, and Resplandor on Saturday evening.

Fiesta Edinburg will open on Thursday, February 23, 2017, with the Heart of America Carnival from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The carnival will feature a $10 All You Can Ride Night on Thursday.

On Friday, February 24, 2017, Lauren Corzine will perform at 6 p.m., Eddie Sáenz will perform at 7:15 p.m. and The Powell Brothers will perform at 8:30 p.m. Turner will take the stage at 10 p.m. The Heart of America Carnival will be open from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

The Fiesta Parade will take place Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 10 a.m.

Performances at the amphitheater include Resplandor at 6 p.m., Notable at 7:15 p.m., Zamorales at 8:30 p.m., and Los Cadetes de Rosendo Cantu at 10 p.m.. The Heart of America Carnival will be open from 12-11:30 p.m., and the Family Fun Zone will open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday will also feature a Folklorico and Conjunto Invitational Competition from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Heart of America Carnival will open on Sunday, Feb. 26 from 4-10 p.m.

The new stadium, which is wrapping up construction, also will feature a full-service restaurant and concessions, practice fields, executive lounges, a sports bar, 33 suites and a total capacity of 16,000. Suites include VIP amenities and a 16-seat capacity.

Besides Rio Grande Valley Toros FC soccer matches, the new facility is expected to host Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash soccer preseason matches, concerts and other community events.

The Rio Grande Valley Toros FC is a member of the United Soccer League (USL). The team will serve as the development affiliate of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo. The USL is the strongest U.S. men’s professional soccer league below Major League Soccer (MLS), it features 24 teams in 2015 across the United States and Canada with multiple teams in all four time zones.

“H-E-B Park in Edinburg is a premier facility and we’re thrilled to have naming rights for the stadium,” said Linda Tovar, H-E-B Senior Manager of Public Affairs, said last summer, during a news conference announcing the name of the complex. “H-E-B is proud to celebrate the growing options for families both in our stores and out in the community. We are committed to the Rio Grande Valley, and this branding opportunity demonstrates the excitement and energy we share for the bright future of the Valley.”

H-E-B, an American business success story which is headquartered in San Antonio, has three major grocery stores in Edinburg, and 149 stores in other Texas cities.

“We would like to thank our presenting sponsors Bert Ogden and Fiesta Dealerships, Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, City of Edinburg and the RGV Toros,” added Larralde. “Without their continued support, none of this is possible.”
